You might have encountered both brush and brushless motors so far. But do you know the difference? Well, grasping the difference can in return tell you which one is the right one for you.
So, have a look at the two types of motor-
Brushed RC Motors
Starting, the brushed motors have brushes made of copper, silver, or graphite. These come in contact with the ‘commutator’ which resides in the central shaft. And it passes electricity to it, enabling it to rotate magnetically.
The contact is kept mild, so they don’t get wrapped up when the motor rotates.

How to Maintain a Brushed Rc Motor?
Only buying a motor won’t do the job, you’ll also have to take proper care of it. Now, while maintaining the brushed RC motors a lot of factors weigh in. So, let’s have a look at them one by one, what do you say?
Cleaning a Brushed RC Motor
The first step towards cleaning an RC motor is to remove all its parts. Now, before that make sure that the motor is rebuildable. Otherwise, the parts won’t come off.
At the same time, ensure that the plugs come out easily so that they don’t break. Afterward, dust the dirt by using a toothbrush. And once the majority of the dirt is swept away, use compressed air to finish up dusting.
Then, dip the brushed motor in the water and wipe it off by using a rag. Lastly, place everything back in place to finish up the work.
Oiling a Brushed RC Motor
Running the motor all day can really put a drain on the whole device. So, oil it up from time to time to ensure less wearing and friction, essentially boosting up the lifetime of the motor.
Before we go into the details you should know that you don’t necessarily have to oil the ball bearing. The main target is the bushing. But the question is how do you oil the motor?
Well, here goes the step-
- Loosen up the output shaft
- Apply a few drops of oil on the bushing which eventually goes does to the ball bearings
- Rotate the output gear to make sure the oil reaches all the parts of the bushing
- Wipe off excess oil
- Repeat on the opposite side of the bushing (end cap)
- Don’t let oil slip into the brushes
- Don’t apply little or excess oil
- Don’t use the water break-in method
Now, you might wonder how often to oil your RC car or boat motor.
Well, for RC cars you should oil once in every running hour. Whereas for RC boats you should oil once before every day of running.
Keeping the Motor Cool
Once the motor overheats it takes a toll on the motor. Thus its life tends to drain out. But why do motors overheat?
Well, there are 4 main reasons. They are-
- Poor ventilation(not letting hot air out around the motor)
- Using the car too hard
- Over gearing or under gearing
- Wrong sizing of the motor for a specific RC car/boat scale
Here are a few ways to keep the motor under ambient temperature-
Cut a Vent or Fan the Motor
Firstly, without proper ventilation, the RC car won’t be able to cool down. Well, as a solution you can cut a vent in the RC car or fan it. At the same time, you can also create a heat bath for your RC car.
Get the Correct Size for off-road Racing
Another thing that might heat up your car is track resistance. You see, if you run an RC car with lower size(280, 370, 380, etc) on rough tracks like grass or sand, then the motor will have to work harder to make the car run.
So, to ensure the motor doesn’t wear off, don’t use the low-powered motor. Instead, try to aim for a motor that can support such heavy work.
On the other hand, even if you have the right-sized car don’t push it off the limit.
Don’t Over-Gear or Under-Gear the Motor
Thirdly, make sure that you’re not over gearing or under gearing the motor. Now, you have to ensure that the pinion gear corresponds to the turn rating of the motor.
For example- A 12T motor should have a pinion gear of about 18 or 19. For higher or lower pinion gear, it’ll be over-geared or under-geared consecutively. Eventually, that will heat up the motor as well.
How to Make a Brushed Motor Faster?
After using the motor for a while it tends to slow down. And who wants that? So, we have a few tricks up our sleeve that’ll help you make the motor run faster.

You should know that there are 2 types of break-ins. One is wet and the other one is dry. Now, we recommend a dry break-in. That’s because the wet method may blow your motor.

Tighten the winding
Another trick you can try is tightening the winding. Now, you can do this by simply using your hand. This works best in the case of flat wire.
Upgrade brush and magnet
One more thing you can opt for is a better quality magnet and brushes. They will boost up your motor in no time.
Advance the timing
Lastly, you can advance the timing. But what is the timing? Well, it’s the angle between the rotor relative and the stator winding.
Now, the best range for timing is 16 to 24 degrees. So, do try to keep it in that range for a faster-working motor.
By the way, here are a couple of tips for perfect RC car brushed motor timing–
- Don’t keep it between the 25 to 35 range, because it causes the brushes to wear out.
- Don’t keep it between 5 to 15 because it’ll cost you top speed.
